A triple bill featuring three accomplished solo musicians looks set to be one of the most intriguing and unmissable gigs of the month at The Junction. Nick Mulvey, Ana Silvera and Gil Karpas are distinctive and original performers in their own right, each with close links to Cambridge, but who have all found success and acclaim much further afield for evocative music that bears its influences from across the globe.
Nick Mulvey studied music in Havana and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, where he became a founding member of the Portico Quartet, who garnered great acclaim for their unique, contemporary, jazz-influenced sound. For the Portico Quartet, Nick played the Hang, a distinctive modern percussion instrument, but since going solo in 2010 he has returned to his previous love, the guitar.
Singer and composer Ana Silvera describes her music as ‘indie-classical’, but that hardly does justice to the beauty and imagery contained within her compositions. She recently wrote a choral song cycle that was performed to sell-out audiences at the Roundhous in Camden and she is set to return there soon for a performance of new work with Imogen Heap. Her new EP The Aviary was recorded in New York with Maxim Moston of Antony and the Johnsons fame, and is set to see her orther-worldly sound reach new heights.
Also on the bill, Gil Karpas is a Cambridge-based musician well known in these parts for his Beatnik Radio show, and for being a regular performer at Cambridge venues. He has recently appeared with Israeli alt-rock superstar Geva Alon, and has a new three-track EP of his at times experimental, but always tuneful music out soon. All in all, should be a thoroughly inspiring evening of live music.
