The Cambridge International School has grown from strength to strength since its early days at Brookside in 2006. The School opened in 2006 with just twelve pupils and is now a vibrant and internationally mixed environment with 220 pupils aged from 3 to 16 years. The only International School in Cambridge, the school provides a welcoming and stimulating environment for international pupils. Specialised language tuition is offered for all pupils; from Mother Tongue and Immersion programmes to intense teaching of English as a Second Language to those pupils who arrive in the UK with little command of the language. Internationalism is a focus of all areas of the curriculum and pupils enjoy learning about the cultures, customs and lifestyles of their fellow students.
As well as all the traditional subjects, pupils are encouraged to develop skills which will form a basis for the ability to succeed in, and enjoy, their future educational and working lives. Business Enterprise, Current Affairs and Public Speaking/Debating lessons have proved to be popular and rewarding additions to the range of subjects taught in the Senior School.
Class sizes are small; with a maximum of 16 pupils per class. Early language learning is a priority from the Infant Department onwards, with all pupils studying two modern languages and some gifted linguists learning as many as five! Everyone in the school benefits from the international mix of pupils; children born and bred in Cambridge enjoy sharing their life styles and experience with their classmates just as much as those from more far flung and exotic parts of the world.
Infant and Junior pupils are based at Cherry Hinton Hall, an Edwardian building set in 27 acres of parkland. In 2010 the decision was made to expand the Senior School to allow two classes per year from Year 7 to 11. The school purchased an impressive facility in Little Abington, just South of Cambridge. A fleet of mini buses provide a comprehensive transport network to and from the city centre, Cherry Hinton Hall and outlying villages.
The School underwent an Ofsted inspection in 2011 and the findings of the inspection team were extremely positive. With all areas achieving good or outstanding levels, particular praise was given to the pupils’ behaviour, manners and attitude to learning.
The staff and pupils were delighted with another excellent set of IGCSE/GCSE results last year. All pupils achieved 100% pass rate A to C. These grades have enabled all the Year 11 pupils to be awarded places at one of the excellent range of Sixth Form Colleges in the Cambridgeshire area.
