Ben Howard at The Junction – December 7th 2011
I don’t know if it’s just me, but listening to Ben Howard’s music I get images of rugged coastline and crashing waves. His subtle west country twang blends with the almost Gaelic undertone in his music and the accompanying Cello and gently crashing symbols complete the scene. It’s probably no accident though, as the landscape he grew up in has etched it’s way into his unique sound and watching his youtube videos, which are filmed in his native Devon, they seem to be just right somehow.
Currently touring to promote his debut album, Every Kingdom, Ben performed a sell out gig at The Junction, declaring that “I’ve never been to Cambridge!” (sounds like a song title to me).
Opening the set quietly with Diamonds, Ben performed the song with acoustic guitar on his lap in Andy McGee style, before singing the brilliant Old Pine with it’s beautifully crafted acoustic riff – (you know a riff is good when the crowd cheer for it).
Accompanied by India Bourne (Cello and Bass) and Chris Bond (Drums and Bass), the trio worked like one armed paper hangers as they constantly moved from one instrument to another. At one point, Chris was playing both the drums and guitar at the same time!
At this stage of his career, Ben’s set was lean to say the least and it was all over in just eight songs. But it’s a case of quality, not quantity. His music is enchanting and moody, which sometimes means the audience are left standing still and just listening. You have to appreciate good music to stand quietly and soak it up. But The Junction audience did just that and were rewarded with the interaction of singing along with the catchy Keep Your Head Up.
Back on for an encore, Ben strapped on a Telecaster and finished with The Wolves leaving the Junction audience calling for more. You’ve never been to Cambridge Ben, but I reckon you’ll be back.
